Talking to a neighbour a couple of days ago. She is Planning a trip to Brisvegas via Birdsville or Innamincka. I've done a LOT on miles on outback roads in a 2wd Tin Top so am not concerned about the dirt, but, am I mad to consider it on a Boully? Certainly, I'd not do it alone, but, is it worth the "risk" with at least 1, and probably more, 4wd vehicles as "backup"? Would the bike handle the corrugations which is usually the problem on these roads (unless it rains, of course). I've wanted to do, either the Strzlecky or Birdsville tracks for a looooooong time and an opportunity doesn't often land in your lap like this.

If so, what spares would you recommend?

    If not, why not?

Mate , some mad bastard rode his Harley to the tip of cape york and then rode across the guts via canning stock route so I reckon a suzuki will do it ok but if you do hit any rain I think those guards on the c50 might cause a bit of a problem chocking with mud.

I asked generally about a big trip elsewhere, so, you are correct, Hulk. At that stage, I had not even considered hitting the Strzlecki or Birdsville tracks on a Boully. Those sorts of roads are often just hundreds of miles of corrugations and bulldust until it rains. I've done more than a few kms in a tin top. Not having done any of this on a bike I needed to know that I'm not insane. At this stage we're looking at August 13th via the Strzlecki track and then to Brissy. Hulk, how would you go for escaping Victoria by then? Return is very up in the air, I have a daughter and lots of friends in and around Brissy, then friends up the coast to Cairns with a brother there. So QLD might be a couple of months to a year or so.

Thanks Scotty, brings back lots of memories of when the Stuart Hwy was one big mud puddle after a little bit of rain! Friends 4wd is a bit slow with the van on the back, so we are going to set up a photo of the Boully "towing" it up a hill somewhere out there. :D

You're right there gazzar. I said goodbye to my wife in May. She knew I was gonna hit the road when that occurred. I'm looking forward to it. Was talking to a bloke today who did the road (by 4wd) not long back and commented that it might be worth fitting offroad tyres. :D

Talking to neighbour again today, sounds like Birdsville, then back down to Innamicka before heading across to Brisvegas.

Do they even make off road tyres of the right size for Boullies? I picked up the appropriate allen key sockets to remove the front wheel, from what I can see, all that is needed for a rear wheel is a big shifter. At this stage, I'll book the bike in for a major service and new tyres and tubes about a week before we leave, I'll keep the old tyres & tubes as spares for the road, and pray that I never need them. If need be, I'll replace them again when I hit Brisvegas.

I told my daughter that I was seriously considering the trip and she is quite excited to see her "daddy", so I guess the trip is definitely gonna happen. I did get a 20L "fuel bag" as recommended by Sneikz in the other thread, it arrived today and, I am very impressed, given that they did not commit until early next month. I am getting mildly excited, now. :D

I thought I'd best check to see if all the stuff fits, On the back is a swag, tent,a helmet for my 6yo grandson (only for riding his pushie, so it doesn't have to be "safe") capping it all is the fuel bag and in front of that is my food. The panniers will have my tools (found the RH one resting on the exhaust so base is a little the worse for wear), and LHS will carry my clothes and wet weather gear. hopefully, the tank bag will only need to carry cameras and chargers.

Below is a rough idea of my planned trip - how long it takes is like asking how long is a piece of string. :D

Don't like your chances of your rear indicators lasting the whole trip with those straps around them

Neither do I! The tie downs are too long,t until I'm certain that everything is going to hold, I thought I might as well wrap it around and tie a pretty bow on top! :D Of course it also gives you blokes something to talk about! :D
They are actually anchored to the carrier which you cannot see under the swag. the extra length is all that's around the indicators.
