put this together for the new lads that may not have seen it or not sure how to do it. Admin could you leave in this section for a while before putting in the how to section as the how to section a bit hard to find for newbies. Ok this mod basically hides the ignition key behind a chrome cap, so when in the bike ignition, you are unable to tell there is a key there, particularly if not familiar with the 9, it now looks like a chrome cover piece. I now leave key in always & only take out, if bike parked overnight on a trip. Ever had that feeling having a cuppa or drink , oh crap i left the key in again!! well now you can. I do though always carry a spare normal key . advantages .... as above disadvantages .... bulky in pocket Step 1 . Ok i use the chrome plastic end cap from oem bar grips i have replaced see pic1 / 2 . you can use whatever you like & have seen all sorts of skulls, etc whatever you can hollow out. buy end caps from dealer. Step 2 . the end cap has a plastic ring mould inside so get pliers & break it off gently see pic3 Step 3 . have a spare key cut preferably by a locksmith not the shopping centre dudes & check it works first Step 4 . you will need 36mm of the key shaft protruding past the caps base, so measure the depth of the chrome cap then add 36mm & cut head of key off to suit . see pic 4 . i find this length of key shaft protruding look good & also ensures this key opens the gas tank as flap gets in the way if key is any shorter Step 5 . now simply use say JB weld or any metal putty , place key in position & putty away about 3/4 up sides is fine. i put masking tape over the chrome edge so keep putty off the face. hold in position ensure perpendicular & straight till putty sets, its pretty quick. see Pic 5 . i paint the putty black. Leave for say 24hrs to set before use. Tip ..if you are using the caps from old bar sets, then the spare cap fits neatly in the rear axle shaft covering the bolt, on the clutch lever side , slip tiny amount silastic on end push in.
