I can, just, spin the rear axle with a hex drive and a long ratchet handle, but no amount of levering against the threaded end will get it to slide out. Any tips before I pull the pipes off and drift it out?

Pipes off .............. whack it out .............. super fine sandpaper .. clean it all up ...... oil the axle ...... I use RP7 or CRC ... I reckon grease is too thick .............. never had a problem and can always pull the axle out by hand when I need to .............

Pressure on the pipe side, socket on the other side and spin whilst pushing.
Also you should be sitting behind it with the tyre on your feet and thighs so you can apply upward pressure and take the weight off the axle.

If you undo the bolts on the rear exhaust bracket , you can get enough movement to get a rod on the end of the axle and whack it with a hammer. The rod will not be straight on to the axle but is good enough to move the axle out. I found the problem was caused by too much lock tight on the thread and gets on the main shaft and sets.

That's kinda what I've been trying, but it doesn't sound like an uncoordinated shitfight when you describe it.... Might spin the axle with an impact driver whilst levering. Only need to budge it a couple of inches so the head clears the final drive case. At that point I can get a slide hammer onto it...
