Good luck to you riding those distances in Alice springs, Darwin, Katherine etc... You'll be flat out getting out of the hotel room...

Um, nope, however I've worked in NT and I can tell you that it's bloody hot, humid and can have some pretty horrific storms! It is also magical, beautiful and majestic...!
Like I said good luck with doing those distances, not that it can't be done, just it will be really hard yacca...!
I'm sure the boys in NT will say similar, September is probably the best time to go in regards to weather and scenaray...

No speed limit 200 k's each side of the Alice should help. And the rest of the Territory is 130KPH.

(Note: the following post contains personal opinion. Not everyone will agree!)

Strongly suggest, don't waste time in Katherine. Do the overnighter, and come straight to Darwin the next day. With three days in Darwin, I can organise two days worth of easy going touring making sure we get in all the good stuff and the third day can be used as a half-time trip maintenance day/rest day. I already have a home workshop well on the way to completed and should be able to do everything with the exception of tyre fitting and balancing. And I'm working on that one too.

Reasons why? Well, Katherine is a hole. No ifs or butts. Most everything you'll see from there can be seen from Darwin pretty much. And there will be much better 'off the bike' stuff in Darwin especially with regards to eating and drinking and resting.

Also, strongly suggest Island View Caravan Park in Yeppoon for the time there. I've organised a few 4x4 club state trips to Yeppoon and surrounds and stayed there numerous times. Great place, great people and great area. I also have maintenance support in Yeppoon as well. It'll probably cost us a decent bottle of scotch though!!

That's it from me. I'm planning on meeting duded in Katherine and then following to Brisbane at this stage. Stopping there and freighting bike home. So looking forward to it all.

    Awesome woody thanks!
I will have a look at updating the details. Probably have to spend one night in Katherine or somewhere near otherwise the distance is too great. I will look at the map...
The caravan park looks cool, I will definitely adjust the trip schedule.

I'd do this around the darwin days especially as it's the halfway point. The trip between Katherine and Darwin can be broken down to include some sight seeing along the way too which could turn that 316 kms into a good touring day instead of just straight highway. Alice to Katherine will be pretty exhausting and mind numbing so it'll be good to break it down and help the mind wake up a bit before leaving Darwin again. Plus it'll be a good opportunity to every bike on a stand and give it a thorough check over. I'll have servicing capability ready and fingers crossed we won't need any repairs.

    Thanks Woody,
that looks good to me. Darwin is actually one of the cheapest places in the whole route to get accommodation, so I have no problem with spending an extra day there. For Yeppoon we actually have a nice Hotel to stay at. Its the cheapest place for 4-5 star on the route, we figured after a hard 6 days running across the Barkly highway it was going to be nice to relax and have a bit of luxury.

I'm fairly sure the Beemer will be good for servicing. I will make sure I have a service when we leave Sydney and I shouldn't need another one until after we get back to Sydney. Thanks for offering the facility mate, it will be really useful for whomever else is coming. It was really useful for JR to have a place to drop the oil in Perth after the ride across from Adelaide.

My suggestion around the proposed Katherine stop (I used to live in Katherine so I'm not as negative as Woody, but I get his point.) I'd travel Tennant to Mataranka and stay at the Mataranka Homestead and go for a swim in the hot springs, followed by a beer in their bar.

Mataranka to Adelaide River 303 Bar for lunch (300kms) (NOT the roadhouse go behind into the pub) probably has the best barramundi and chips in the NT and great open air eating.
Then take a detour through Litchfield national Park to Wangi falls. After so much straight road it will be nice to get onto windy stuff once more, and waterfalls abound with swimming holes (They'll let you know if its safe from crocs.)
Then overnight at either Batchelor or Adelaide river, and make your way to Darwin the next day.
Darwin is only 100kms further up the road.

A lot of the locals visit Litchfieldnational park instead of Kakadu as things are closer, and more accessible without a 4WD or helicopter.

I'll probably come and meet you either in Katherine or Adelaide river and ride back to Darwin with you, and try and get the other Darwin Boulevard riders to come along.
This side of Katherine we can offer support, so you'll want a phone number for one of us before you leave.

    cheers
    JP

Mr Elephantman you sir are a fucking legend!

Thanks very much for that. I am reading through various websites and books on riding the North and I have already changed my mind about a couple of locations and stops. This is a great post and I will definitely be adding it to the route!
