On our little trip west in 2014 we were talking about how to do this again and where we should go.

For me, I've always wanted to go to Uluru and I've only got 2 states to go and I've ridden all 7 states. I've always wanted to visit Darwin and if we are lucky they will have removed the speed limit in the NT by then.

So we are doing a little straight up the middle trip to Darwin in October 2016.

We haven't decided which one of these two variations we will do yet and its up for discussion. Getting yourself to the start point is up to you and isn't included in the distance calculations, nor is getting yourself home from Sydney.

I've put a poll in this thread, I may or may not pay attention to it, its more to create discussion.

Hey Diddle Diddle Straight up the Middle 6000km
Port Pirie to Darwin and back via Woomera, Uluru, Alice Springs, Katherine, Darwin and then reversed.
Taking on our learning's from the WA ride, this will involve stopping for longer at specific points and more organised "stuff to do" at each location.

    "The Box" 7200km
Port Pirie to Darwin via Woomera, Uluru, Alice Springs, Katherine, Darwin.
Back via Darwin, Katherine, Mount Isa, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton/Yeppoon, Bundaberg (Rum tour is compulsory!) - basically a parade down the Queensland coast back to Sydney.

I'm in Darwin for the next two years at least so I'll definately join for the Darwin down to Qld leg of the trip. Sounds great!

I am planning at the moment to do exactly the same trip in May/June next year (2015). Starting from Brissie and ride via Darwin, down the guts, stop in Alice and hike Larapinta Trail and then continue via Adelaide and Melb and Sydney to Brisbane.
My concern are the distances between gas stations. Have you looked into it, whether you have to take a spare canister with fuel?

o.k, o.k, o.k... After reading all about Perth for the last month I'm gunna doing this one.
Like Meba said, I'm going to need to position for 6 weeks leave for this...
I have trouble leaving my postcode, so 6,000 kms scares me - you got room on the Wing Meba if I cark it?

Looking at riding from Perth to Adelaide then join the group to Darwin, but then turning left and riding back to Perth via Kununura, Broome and the coast.
Definitely considering riding on the dark side for this trip

One thing to consider going in October that the wet season has started to kick in and it might be better to go in late September.
Look at weather up that way at the moment!

This sounds great. The last time I did this was in '85. Looking a $5k for the trip and fuel stops on the way (better build some gerries into the paniners).

I will start saving! Can't promise anything and the good wife might get upset.

Anyone got plans for a side car that works?

    Cheers Don

Yup, its very flexible at the moment, consider the option to be sometime in sept/oct 2016 at the moment.

And yes Lefty has a side car :)

This time of year Darwin starts to heat up. I just came back from a holiday up there visiting mates (yeah, I have them). Mid year is awesome weather and as said earlier, end of September it starts to warm up as the humidity rises and temps average around 35+ degrees depending where you are. Riding with full gear on is a PITA.

Ayers Rock is a great view but check out the charges they want per person just to go near the joint first. The distance between the turn off to Ayers Rock (Erldunda) to Ayers Rock itself is something like 260km so fuel could be interesting for some. Be prepared to sell your kidney ;)

The trial for the open speed limits have increased in size and the roads are good. Again, just be aware of where the fuel stops are located. Map of the new limits http://www.transport.nt.gov.au/__da...artHighwayOpenSpeedLimitTrialExtension_sm.pdf

Not for me Grom. Foreman farking off right near the end of the job with 4 apartment towers and 230 apartments to commission would go down like a sack of the proverbial!
Id need to be between contracts and on someone elses job for that sort of freedom.
